Hamlet: Ophelia

The charecter Ophelia in Hamlet is a much needed charecter in the novel as it would not be the same without her. She clearly compares to Hamlet during her madness as she has been abandonded by all that are close to her in the same way that Hamlet has lost all that were close to him.

Ophelia is clearly distrought by no one being there for her as her father is dead, her brother missing and now Hamlet has been sent away to England. Ophelia shows that she still thinks of Hamlet and could still love him by the line 'Before you tumbled me, you promised me to wed.'. I dont think Ophelia is truly mad when she starts singing about her father as i think by her singing about Polonius she is making his death romantic and that she did love her father.

Ophelia's death is romantic in the way that she is described to have been making 'fantastic garlands' of flowers that are found around the river. She is also seen as being 'mermaid-like' which are seen as being beautiful and charming.
