My opinion on Nick

My opinion on Nick after reader the novel is he seems to be a very lonely type of guy he doesn’t really attach himself to anything even people. Due to this detachment from most of the world he seems to be very judgmental towards other people. This also effects how he describes what he sees as it is in great detail and overly poetic in the words he chooses. When Nick describes such small things he amplifies the impact the object has on the surrounding world such as the angelic curtains floating in the gentle breeze or the looming billboard of Dr T.J.Eckleburg. As the reader we rarely find out what other characters in the novel are actually due to Nicks majorly biased opinions on them. Nick either makes characters seem posh and snobbish or untrustworthy and hated, this shows Nick's negative view on people. Due to most of these characteristics of Nick's it makes me think that I wouldn’t like to meet him because of the fear that he would be judging me in such detail that I wouldn’t be able to comprehend.

'The Great Gatsby' Chapters: 4 and 5

Narrative style:
In Chapter 4 Fitzgerald changes the narrator from Nick to Jordan and back again.The switch seems to happen without much say about it. Even though this seems odd it didnt confuse me at all by the switch.
Chapter 5 returns to Nick as the narrator. Nick seems lonely in this chapter described by the bad weather.

Characters and characterisation:
Gatsby seems overly friendly with Nick when asking him to help him with a little work which Nick seems very suspicious of. Gatsby calls Nick 'Old sport' and asks him to join him in the swimming pool.
Nick seems lonely and doesnt really like where Gatsby and Daisy are heading in there relatioship that is building.
Daisy seems very unhappy at one point as she starts to cry becuase of an old memory of Gatsby and herself. This shows that she isnt always as bubbly as i first thought.
You meet some of Gatsbys work associates in chapter 4 which Nick seems to dislike right off the bat calling them rude and describing all their horrible misdeeds. This further adds to what Gatsbys line of work actaully is.

Themes:
There are themes of suspicion with Nick wondering what Gatsby's job is. Love/obsession that Gatsby seems to have with Daisy. Love is also a theme that is associated with Nick and Jordan as they finally show their feelings towards each other. Nick seems very unhappy and lonely in chapter 5.

Settings:
The setting is mainly based around Nicks house and a hotel. The weather is bad which makes the stort seem that somthing bad will come of Gatsby and Daisy's relationship.

How you respond to the text:
I thought that Nick seems very unsure and doesnt really know what will come of Gatsby and Daisy's building relationship.
The work associates of Gatsby seem to add a somewhat suspicous and maleavalent side to his work after hearing some of the things they have done whereas Gatsby seems to have got overly nice towards Nick.

The Great Gatsby: Chapters 2 and 3

Narrative style:
Chapter 2 is us seeing the party in New York through Nick's eyes. This chapter has a build up in climax as Tom and Mrs Wilson are arguing about Mrs Wilson Saying Daisy's name, which ends up with Tom breaking her nose. At the end of the chapter you see cleary that Nick is drunk and the time skips multiple times as he doesnt know whats going on between these time skips.
Chapter 3 is us seeing Gatsby's party through Nicks eyes. The main part to it is when Gatsby is introduced to Nick but it doesnt really have as much emphasis at it should for meeting such an important charecter. The time used here flows as Nick walks through room to room fluently as a normal person would in his place.

Characters and characterisation:
Chapter 2 you see the true colours of Tom as you meet his mistress unknown to Daisy. Tom also ends up getting in an arguement with his mistress Mrs Wilson and breaks her nose.
Nick gets drunk which he said this is only his second time he has ever got drunk in his life, which is obviuosly something he doesnt do often.
Mrs Wilson knows what she wants and she gets what she wants too this is due to Tom buying her things like a puppy and renting an apartment for her. At one point she covers up a tapestry of scenes of Versailles with some magazines called Town tattle because she wants Tom to not go back to his rich lifestyle and stay with her.
Chapter 3 you see Nick as being very shy towards the start of Gatsby's party as he cant see anyone he knows and becuase of this he says he wants to go to the cocktail bar and get drunk but as soon as he sees Jordan Baker he rushes to see her to 'cling' to her during the party. As the night goes on Nick opens up as he meets new people and becomes a lot less shy.
Jordan Baker is obviously very popular and well known due to her golfing and knows a lot of people at the party.
Other guests at the party are rude as they dont get get invited to Gatsby's party they just turn up. They also gossip about Gatsby saying he is a 'German spy' at one point.
Gatsby is introduced at this point but his description is very vague which is odd as he is such an important charecter in this novel.

Themes:
Chapter 2: there are themes of love, hate and class divide found in the differences between egg island and New York.
Chapter 3: there are themes of friendship found in Nick and Gatsby and themes of mysteriuosness as no one knows what Gatsby does or what he even looks like.

Settings:
Chapter 2 is set in New York which in the second paragraph of chapter 2 is described as being grey and bleak which doesnt sound as nice as the Egg island. Its also very polluted and also described as having loads of grey ashen hills.
Chapter 3 is back on Egg island and in Gatsby's mansion which is described as having a Gothic style to it and having large English oak doors. His garden is huge and measured in acres which shows just how large his mansion is.

How you respond to the text:
Chapter 2 shocked me due to Tom breaking Mrs Wilson's nose but at the same time it didnt surprise due to the way he was described as being a hulking brute.
Chapter 3 i felt was a dissapointment when it came to Nick meeting Gatsby as it wasnt a very good meeting as it was rushed and Gatsby was drunk.

The Great Gatsby Chapter One

'The Great Gatsby' : Chapter One

The narrator for the majority of chapter 1 is Nick and we see everything through his eyes. He sees alot of detail in everything and describes characters and places so well that there is a clear picture painted in ones own mind. Nick also describes the way he sees others and has a good idea of what they are like from first glance. The first Chapter builds up to Nick finally seeing a silhouette of Mr.Gatsby.

Nick himself is slightly sarcastic to appease his cousin 'Daisy' at one point but apart from that he seems to be a lighthearted businessman.
Nick's cousin Daisy is a bubbly and funloving type of person but at times can become serious especially at the time when the phone rang on page 22 and when she is talking to Nick on page 23. Daisy is quite ditsy and sometimes appears to be silly which adds to her bubbliness.
Tom is Daisy's huband he seems to get jealous of other people and likes to be the center of attention like on page 16 Daisy and Nick are talking and Tom just butts in.
Miss Baker seems to be a rather posh person but doesnt seem to have much to do in her life so she is always sleeping around.

Themes found in Cahpter one of 'The Great Gatsby' are of unrestfulness as Tom and Daisy can never stay in the same place for too long without moving. Another theme in Chapter one is of mysterious associated with Gatsy due to his presence being silhouetted when first seen by Nick.

The setting in Tom and Daisy's mansion is described as angelic with the white curtains fluttering as wind comes in through the windows. Aslo at the start Nick's bungalow is described as being set in on the more unfabulous 'egg'.

Thisw is not really the type of book i would read but the way the author puts the sense of mysteriousness around Gatsby has intrigued me and this makes me want to know more abou him and his part to play in this book.
