Hamlet essay

Exploration of the language used by Hamlet in Act Three of William Shakespeare's 'Hamlet'.

In scene 1 of act 2 Hamlet expresses his thought's through a soliloqy in a poetic manner portrayed though Shakespeare's unique language. This passage describes Hamlet's mental state in the play and show's off language Shakespeare uses to convey Hamlet’s thoughts. Through the use of literary technique's Shakespeare captures Hamlet’s reflective thoughts on how he can achieve his goal of revenge. The character Hamlet continues his gloomy behavior after seeing actors without any motivation act more aggressively then Hamlet should be doing against his uncle, King Claudius. The feelings are expressed in a soliloqy, which often reveals the character’s true thoughts because it is a speech being told from his inner mind. He is mentally disturbed shown by the line “to be or not to be-that is the question.” here he is thinking whether he should carry on living and get revenge or to give up and end his life. The word used are concise and sweet because they follow a rhythm characteristic of poetic blank verse. Hamlet decide's whether it would be nobler to suffer through the pains of life or to take the ultimate sacrifice and choose death. Hamlet wants to choose the most honorable path, including getting revenge for his father's, the king before Claudius, death. He doesn't seem to be afraid of death and is willing to “take arms against a sea of troubles”. Hamlet then continues thinking about death and simplifies it as 'sleeping'. Ending all the hardship's of his life is greatly desired for him, especially ending the memory of his father’s murder and his belief of his mother’s betrayal. Hamlet begins to focus on sleeping and dreams from the line “To die, to sleep, to sleep, perchance to dream” is written in a more poetic manner with the iambic pentameter. Hamlet seem's to become fearful to the 'unknown' by saying that people do not know “what dreams may come” and is why people suffer through the calamities of life. Dreams can also be a symbol for the unknown. The lines from 85 to 90 in scene 1 give's a conclusion for people’s relationship toward death. They would rather suffer through known turmoil than to suffer the grief of the what lies in the unknown. The irony that Shakespeare’s 'Hamlet' points out is that the “conscience tends to make cowards of us all.” maening we are born into a world afraid of death and continue to be afraid of death until the day we die. Hamlet is unable to make the right choice because his conscience is creating fear and that fear is blocking his usual clear thinking. The soliloqy ends with a metaphor of 'rivers turning awry' as an interpretation for life. If a person lives his life afraid of what there is to come, there will be no going forward in life. People would have no meaning behind there live's if they suffered through it always worrying about death. The concept's of life and death are so meaningful that Shakespeare has to capture them in Hamlet's soliloqy. Hamlet’s mental state is what it is because of his perception's of his own honour and that if he fails in his plot it ultimatly mean's his death. After the ghost of Hamlet's father reveals to Hamlet the murder, he creates his own duty ,even though to me it seem's to be a burden, for himself of gaining revenge for his father. His emotion's seem to me that he has to avenge his father or his father will not be able to rest in peace. Shakespeare uses these images constantly to emphasis Hamlet’s suicidal tendencie's. The images are very descriptive and are of what Hamlet notices in his surroundings of which suffering and death seem to be the one's found mostly throughout this passage. Shakespeare also uses the line 'Be all my sin's remebered' i think this stand's out, as i think Hamlet is wanting to show that even though he is trying to be noble he still has bad things he has commited and needs to atone for them.

In conclusion i feel as though Shakespeare has used Hamlet to portray his own feelings and mental state throughout this passage showing just how he feels with how his era needed to show their own honour. I also feel as though Shakespeare has shown how he felt with his life and that he could have had suicidal tendencie's because death seems to be the main theme throughout the play and not just act three.

Hamlet :act 3

The main tragic part of this act is when Hamlet finds Ophelia and basically tells her that he never loved her and breaks up with her. Hamlet also has his mad act on furthering Ophelias grief which i dont think she deserves as she hasnt wronged anyone in the play. Later in this act Ophelia is once again struck by grief when her father Polonius dies at the hands of Hamlet.

Hamlet is also faced with a dilemma as he has a chance to avenge his father but he doesnt go through with this and kill Claudius because he is praying and Hamlet doesnt want him to go to heaven when his father is in limbo neither in hell or heaven.
Hamlet also has a tragic moment when he kills Polonius thinking that he is the king, this happens in front of his mother the queen which scares her something Hamlets father told him to avoid doing.
